I used to live in the Eastern Suburbs of Sydney, Bellevue Hill to be exact. As an ex-Londoner I needed to be near the beach because…well we don’t have any and the East was just so pretty. My husband hails from the Inner West which I wasn’t too familiar with. The only place I’d really been was Newtown and that was only to get my hair done.
When we had our son we decided to move back into the area to be near my mother-in-law and also the East was just too expensive to buy a family home (although the Inner West is getting that way too). Let’s just say it was a rough transition. It was much more urban that the East, it wasn’t very easy on the eye and I felt like a fish out of water.
But lo and behold it started to grow on me! I joined a local mothers group and everyone was so down to earth and lovely which helped. The Inner West is very multicultural and reminds me of London. There are so many great places to eat, shop and unwind. There are hipsters on every corner and new cool restaurants and bars popping up all the time!
Here’s what we get up to in our local area on the weekend!
The Best of the Inner West
We took Bub Stylista along to The Dulwich Hill Village Fair. We love our food and Dulwich Hill is famous for it’s fresh food and produce. We sampled the host of international cuisine that was on offer including cakes, pastries, cheese, roast chicken, homemade preserves and deli items.
I also checked out the cute kids clothing stalls, I’m stocking up for our new addition and I keep an eye out for my blog to share new finds with my readers.
There was lots of chlidren’s activities too including an Earthbeats Children’s Music performance, children’s yoga workshops, a petting zoo, face-painting and the Magic Yellow Bus.
Bub Stylista can’t get enough of it! He was very impressed by the boot space and interior and the hub had to fight him for the front seat. I’m a fan too! I’m 34 weeks pregnant and it was a very comfortable drive for me and my tum. Comfort is all I think about!
We always pop into the Bourke Street Bakery at the weekends to pick up our fave Polenta, Thyme & Feta Sourdough bread, a Brioche Loaf and whatever other pastries we can get our hands on. I told you we love our food!
We usually end up staying for lunch too because the food is out of this world then it’s off to Enmore Park for some Bub Stylista playtime.
One of the perks of living in the Inner West is Ikea in Tempe! I can’t get enough of the place especially with Bub No.2 on the way! There is always something else that you really
need want. I always make sure I go in with a list because I’ll end up buying the whole store!
I took the Ford Kuga Titanium and I’m loving the boot space, I drive a BMW 3 series at the moment and the hub and I were looking at upgrading to a 4WD for the storage. This one is perfect. It fits all my shopping, a pram, scooter and anything else Bub Stylista decides to bring that day.
One of the features I love though is the kick-activated tailgate system! All you have to do is wave your foot under the bumper and et voilà the boot opens! Mums you will love this, no more fiddling about with keys and opening the boot manually whilst trying to get your shopping and a pram in. Anything that makes my life easier gets a thumbs up from me!
We love visiting the Addison Road Organic Food Markets which is on every Sunday from 8.30-3.00pm. I usually make a bee line for the stall that sells corn fritters, chilli potatoes, haloumi and salad with homemade juice to wash it down.
There is so much to enjoy there, you can wander through the myriad of market stalls selling certified organic gourmet foods, fresh fruit and vegetables, freshly baked bread and vegan and vegetarian foods.
There are also vintage stalls, second-hand clothes and the famous Reverse Garbage Warehouse which is Australia’s largest reuse centre. You will find reusable off-cuts, over-runs, art & craft materials, stage props, furniture and other nic-nacs. It hosts a very bizarre collection of items but it’s fun for a rummage and you might just find something really useful.
Bub Stylista loves going for a ride on the mini-ponies and having a play on the jumping castle. There is also face painting, music and eco-friendly baby food and clothing. Such a great atmosphere and the perfect way to while away a few hours on a Sunday!
I’m quite partial to the iconic Harry’s Cafe de Wheels. Being pregnant hot dogs are off the menu but l’m a big fan of their pies and milkshakes too.
I used to love going to the one in Woolloomooloo and it’s great that we have one nearby. It’s just nice to park up your car and treat yourself to something naughty with the family every once in awhile!
Last but not least, one of my fave local Inner West spots is the Cooks River. It’s such a gorgeous place to unwind, so peaceful and tranquil. I exercise here by going for a long walk along the river. We have picnics and take Bub Stylista down on his scooter. There is also a fabulous water park for kids in the Summer.
It’s such a beautiful spot and I often come down on my own to clear my head. It’s great to have such a natural environment so close to my home.
So there we have it…I am officially an Inner West convert and I’ve only touched on my local area. There’s so much more to it! I’m very proud to call the Inner West my home!
