Interview with the Devoted Milliner Cindy Vogels

When did you realise you were destined to become a milliner?

From a very young age I knew I was destined to be a Fashion Designer/Manufacturer, I’ve been creating fashion items of every description for so long I almost don’t differentiate between Millinery and Clothing. It’s all just a gorgeous expression of what I want to share with the world.

What is your favourite part of the job?

Hmm so many parts, but a favourite quote comes to mind. ‘If you’re feeling glamorous, it’s because you are.’

I get to play a part in women feeling glamorous!

Would you ever turn your hand to designing clothes?

I still do via my clandestine fashion label ‘Racy & Lucky’

Tell us about the hat making process, how long does it take?

It varies greatly from a couple of days to 4-6 weeks depending on sourcing materials, specific colour palettes etc.

I work quite closely with each client to gather info on their outfit, shoes, accessories personal style and personality. It all contributes to the finished Couture Design.

What is your advice for choosing the right hat?

Some basics…… if you’re tall you can pretty much wear anything, I’m not ..aarrghh!

Try plenty on, fascinators with a smaller base and some fun height work well on short to average height women, do your research, Pinterest is where I send my new clients. Go find head-wear that makes your heart beat faster.

Hats should be performance enhancing! When you get it right, this will make sense.

How should you style your hair when wearing a hat?

Sleek is best, it’s all about the headpiece.

Who are your favourite Race Wear designers?

Love Toni Maticevski and Scanlon Theodore so much right now.

What are the top 5 items in your Race Day clutch?

My Samsung Galaxy Note 4, business cards, favourite lip gloss, mini Perfume and if there is fabulous champagne being consumed I’m probably hoarding the little decorative metal caps to pop into my ‘Wearing Memories’ jewellery.

What is the worst fashion faux pas you have seen at the races?

Call me a prude, but too much leg and plunge necklines don’t sit well for me track-side, anywhere else go for it. Oh and poorly made millinery, I’ve seen visible staples on a hand-crafted pillbox once, oh dear!

What are your tips for staying chic on Race Day?

Choose your shoes well! You need to be able to walk out at the end of the day looking as sassy and comfy as when you arrived, so pace yourself with alcohol also.

Bobby pins are handy if the wind picks up and your headwear doesn’t play nice.

Like its name suggests, devotion to the cause of  high end Millinery and empowering women to feel and look their best for special occasion dressing is the very ethos of her brand.

Cindy has been selected to be a part of ‘Racing Fashion the Movie’, a special feature film celebrating Australian racing fashion and millinery.
