A Catch Up With Natalie Bassingthwaighte & a Chi Khi $200 Giveaway

Did you manage to catch my last interview with the divine Natalie Bassingthwaighte? If not read it here.

So much has happened since then, her X-Factor win, the Rogue Traders reunion and the launch of her skincare range.

I caught up with her again to discuss all this and more.

Catch up with Nat Bassingthwaighte

Natalie and X Factor NZ winner Beau Monga

Firstly, congratulations on X-Factor! How did it feel to win the whole thing?

The first season I did in Australia I lost by 1% and the fourth season I lost by 0.1% or something silly so I thought I was destined to never quite win and to take out the prize was just a phenomenal feeling.

Nat onstage with Rogue Traders

Did that inspire you to get on the stage again because you just performed with Rogue Traders for the first time in 7 years! The last time I spoke to you, you didn’t know if you were going to sing again and now look..

I know! Look to be honest, James one of the other members of the band kept saying, ‘What do you guys think about doing something?’ and this year is our 10th anniversary and it just felt right. If we were ever going to do anything it was going to be now.

There was so much nostalgia with the band and we had people enquiring about it so we thought why not? We are now going to be playing on New Year’s Eve as well.

Oh fabulous! Whereabouts?

Rochford Wineries in Melbourne. This one will be a public gig, the one in Queensland was corporate so I’m really excited.

Do you think there will be a new album in 2016?

Oh gosh I don’t know. At the moment I’m just enjoying performing together.

I love singing our old songs. I forgot how many hits we had. It’s so nostalgic and really fun.

Bub & Princess Stylista rocking out in Chi Khi

So let’s talk about Chi Khi, I am absolutely loving the new range, very stylish! Where did you draw the inspiration for the collection?

I definitely wanted to stay in the monochromatic , unisex feel that the brand is going for already. I really like the what the designers came up with. The strong graphic prints for this season. Chi Khi is all about the detail.

The range is strong, straight lines, cool graphic prints, oversized pockets because kids love pockets! It’s more about the prints the season and that finer detailing, some mesh and a few more accessories, backpacks, visors.

Rachel Zoe’s son Skylar wears Chi Khi reversible vest and drop crotch pants

I’ve seen some very stylish mums like Rachel Zoe and Fergie embracing the brand for their children. Why do you think the range is so successful?

I feel like they like something a little bit different and to be able to have that choice is quite liberating in a way.

It’s so stereotypical with boys and girls, with pink for girls and blue for boys and fairies and princesses for girls and trucks and planes for boys. If that’s not your thing it’s really hard to find something in the marketplace.

Chi Khi fabric is so soft, kids love it, it’s really durable and it’s good for sensitive skin. There are lots of reasons.

And it’s so stylish obviously!

Haha, yes!

What made you decide to cater now for older kids?

It was always in my bigger plan for Chi Khi to extend the sizes but I didn’t think it would happen so quickly.

We just had so much demand for it pretty much from the get go that we had to press go instantly to decide whether we were going to go up sizes to get the stock in time.

I’ve always been a dive in at the deep end kind of girl so I thought why not and the reaction has been incredibly positive.

Chi Khi range now caters for older kids

That’s great! My son is getting a bit older now so I’m happy he can still wear it. Now the skincare range, love it! Tell us a bit about it because it’s literally just launched.

Yes so we started with two hero products the Nappy Balm and Wonder Cream.

The nappy balm is all natural and it’s such a beautiful, fine texture. It still has active ingredients in it, it’s still got zinc in it but it doesn’t feely pasty or too thick and it does the trick. It’s an amazing nappy balm!

If your baby has got a deep red bottom which my boy did when I was trialling some samples of it, within 24 hours it was completely gone. It’s beautiful and soft and it does the trick which was the whole point. We wanted a brand that looked good, the packaging was good and the name but it was important for it to work for me.

As fas as the Wonder Cream goes I’m so proud of it. My son is going to have sensitive skin and I wanted to make something from scratch.

I wanted it to be ours and for people to love it and know that we’ve put a lot of care and consideration into it the same as we do with the clothes.

The Wonder Cream has Calendula C02 in it which has 45 times more healing power than regular Calendula. Any mum with a child with sensitive skin knows that that is one of the best things for them. The rest of the ingredients are beautiful and divine.

Mums have been telling me it’s the best thing they have ever used for sensitive skin, nothing else has ever worked.

It feels like we’ve got something that really does work and that’s so exciting for me. The packaging is great, it’s a great gift and it works.

Are you going to be adding more products to the skincare range?

Of course! I had actually done all this research when we were doing the first range so we have sampled and signed off on about 6 other products so it’s in the pipeline and we might drop one in February and one mid-year. The aim is to go big or go home!

Matching knits – a taste of Mummy & Me

So the next thing for you could be even kids interiors? You’ve got kids fashion, skincare,  so why not?

Well I was looking for some quilts for my kids on the weekend and I did end up finding a couple but there wasn’t that much.

Where is the cool, monochromatic kids bed sets, quilts and sheets even cot sets that aren’t stereotypical girly/boy colours and so that could be on the cards.

We have a really exciting collaboration next year with a big company. Lots of exciting things happening.

I love the prints that you use and was thinking this would be great on a quilt..

I know! That’s another thing that’s been in my head. I would love to do a limited edition mummy and me range aswell. You know the same knits or the mum and the kid have got the same pants. Maybe next year..

Well that was my next question, you’ve got such a great eye for fashion are there any plans to design your own womenswear range?

Never say never , at this stage no apart from mummy and me but you never know. I love fashion, I love design.

My husband says he thinks I love it more than anything else I’ve done. It’s quite fascinating to hear your partner saying those types of things.

Nat, Harper & Hendrix

You’re such a busy woman, you probably need a holiday sometime soon. What would be your ideal destination for you and the family?

I’ve always wanted to go to the Maldives but that’s probably not best with the kids . I’ll save that for me and the hubby one day.

I actually really enjoy Fiji. I’ve been there when I was pregnant with Hendrix and Harper was only little and it was just such a wonderful place. The people are beautiful, it’s very relaxing, serene so I would probably go back there. It was really fantastic.

What’s next for the Chi Khi team?

There are some very exciting things coming up that will really take it to the next level.

Great thanks so much Nat! I can’t wait to find out!
